Bullet Point Summary of the 2026 Formula 1 Rule Changes
Table of Contents
Car Design & Aerodynamics
– Cars will be shorter, narrower, lighter and more maneuverable with a shorter wheelbase creating better corner responsiveness
– 18-inch Pirelli tires will be narrower to reduce drag and weight
– Wheel arches above front tires removed
– Flatter floors with extended diffusers and bigger openings will replace the long ground-effect tunnels
– Less downforce and higher ride height requirements better to suit driving styles
– Simpler front and rear wings
– Rear beam wings are gone
– Front wings have more narrow elements

Active Aerodynamics
– Active Aero system allowing drivers to adjust front and rear wing angles
– Flaps stay in default position to maintain grip in the corners
– On designated straights, low-drag mode to opens flaps and flattens wings reducing drag to boost top speed
– Available without the driver ahead one second rule
– replaces the DRS (Drag Reduction System)
Power Unit Changes
– Internal combustion engine output has been reduced while electric motor power has tripled
– Approximately 50-50 power split between petrol and electric (compared to roughly 80-20 previously)
– Energy Recovery System (ERS) can now recharge the battery with twice as much energy per lap
– The expensive and complex MGU-H (heat recovery system) is gone
– Power units will run on Advanced Sustainable Fuels made from sources like carbon capture, municipal waste and non-food biomass
New Driver Tools & Systems
– Overtake Mode: Activated within one second of the car ahead, gives access to extra electrical energy for overtaking or pressuring the driver ahead
– Boost button: Renamed from previous maximum power deployment system, can be used for defense or overtaking anywhere on the lap when battery charge allows
– Battery recharge management: Drivers can select from different modes to recharge their battery through braking and engine energy
Safety Enhancements
– Driver survival cell undergoing more rigorous tests
– Roll hoop strengthened to take 23% more load (approximately the weight of nine family cars)
– Front impact structure redesigned to separate in two stages for greater protection in crashes with secondary impacts
Sporting Impact
– Cars pose new more challenging aspects for teams and drivers to manage
– Lower downforce with tighter control over turbulent air should allow for following a car through corners should be easier
– Drivers will need to manage/learn new technology and a greater set of tactical tool
– The new rules have attracted multiple manufacturers including Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull Powertrains (with Ford), Audi, and returning Honda, with General Motors joining in 2029
